Assign an Activity to a Group or Grouping in Moodle

When using groups in Moodle, you can assign a single activity or all course activities to groups of students.  For activities where students interact, specifically forums, wikis, and databases, using groups allows students in the same group to post and reply to each other.  You can also control whether students can see the work of groups they are not a part of using group modes.  For more information about group modes, refer to Group Modes in Moodle.

Note: Students cannot publish assignments to each other. While you can use groups with assignments, students will not be able to interact or see one anothers' postings. Consider using a forum, wiki, or database instead of an assignment.

Assign a Specific Activity to Groups

  1. To assign a specific activity to groups, you must first set up the groups. Refer to Create & Modify Groups in Moodle for instructions.
  2. On your Moodle course page, click Turn editing on (top right). Editing icons and links will appear.
  3. Add the activity you want to assign to groups (see About Adding Activities to a Moodle Course), or if the activity has already been added, click its Update icon (Edit icon) to open the Edit settings screen for the activity.
  4. On the Edit settings screen, scroll down to Common module settings and click Show advanced settings to see all options.
  5. To assign the activities to all groups in your course, change the Group mode drop-down menu and select either Visible groups or Separate groups.
    • Visible groups allows non-group members to see the work of other groups
    • Separate groups allows only group members to see work within the group

For a detailed explanation of group modes, see Group Modes in Moodle.
Note: When group mode is enabled for an activity, it will automatically be applied to all the groups you have created for your course.  This can cause unexpected results if students are in multiple groups at once. To customize groups depending on the kind of activity, see the section below to assign an activity to a grouping.
  6. To preserve your changes, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save changes.

  3. Add the activity you will assign to groups (see About Adding Activities to a Moodle Course), or if the activity has already been added to the course, click its Update icon (Edit icon) to open the Edit settings screen for the activity.
  4. On the Edit settings screen, scroll down to Common module settings and click Show advanced settings to see all options.
