VoIP phone numbers and mailbox information have been distributed to residents of North Residence Area via email.
If you live in North Residence Area and did not receive your account information, please call the OIT Help Desk at 545-9400 or submit an online help request.
Download VoIP Software
To use VoIP, you must download the VoIP client software, X-Lite, to your desktop or laptop computer and then configure it using the account information you received via campus mail.
Download the X-Lite software for Windows, Mac and Linux from the CounterPath Web
Site: http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite.html.
Check the X-Lite
system requirements before installing:
Note: X-Lite will work, but is not officially supported on, Microsoft
Vista, so although the software should work, you may encounter issues from time to time until a version that fully supports Vista is released.
Configure VoIP Software
Choose your operating system for instructions on setting up the VoIP software (X-Lite) to work for your account on the UMass VoIP system.
VoIP Voicemail
Set Up your VoIP Voicemail Passcode
The VoIP voicemail system is different from the system used with traditional phone service. Information about the VoIP voicemail account will be emailed to residents of the North Residence Area.
If you live in North Residence Area and did not receive your account information, please call the OIT Help Desk at 545-9400 or submit an online help request.
Before you can begin using VoIP Voicemail, you'll need to set up a permanent passcode. Learn how to Set Up Your Voicemail Passcode.
Access & Manage Your Voicemail
There are two ways to access your VoIP voicemail, using the phone interface or using the Web interface. For detailed instructions, see our voicemail documentation:
Purchase a Headset
OIT strongly recommends that users purchase a USB headset with a microphone for use with the UMass VoIP system. Headsets are available at OIT Hardware Support (A22 LGRC), the University Bookstore, and most computer and office supply retailers.
Emergency Calls
Do not use the UMass/OIT Voice over IP (VoIP) service to call 911. The UMass Police Department will not know where you are calling from. Please use traditional phone service or any of the yellow HELP phones located in residence halls and other strategic locations throughout campus. The University and its affiliates cannot be held responsible for problems that ensue from 911 calling using UMass/OIT VoIP.
