UMass Amherst People Finder

Set Options

On the Mailbox Menu, click Options (Options icon) to set and change your preferences.

A. Personal Information

Click Personal Information then on the Personal Information screen, click Edit your identities to set and change the name, address, and signature people see when they read and reply to your email. Here, you can also set your preferences for saving sent mail.

  • Your Full Name:This is the name people will see when receiving your mail. If you do not type in a name here, users will see your email address.
  • Your Reply To: address:This is the email address used when a recipient replies to your email. Type in an address here if you want replies to go to a different email account.
  • Your Signature:As in most email clients, UMail on the Web allows you to create a signature. This signature usually consists of your name and other identifying information (e.g., title, telephone number, and street address) and will appear at the bottom of messages you send from UMail on the Web.
Note: This signature is distinct from those created in other email clients (e.g., Netscape Messenger and Outlook Express). You will have to create a separate signature in other email clients.
  • Save sent mail:Select Save Sent mail to save all sent messages: new, replies, forwards, etc. You can select to save individual messages by activating the check box next to Save in 'Sent'? in the Compose window. Whether you select to save all sent messages or if you select them one by one, you must select a folder in which to save sent messages. We recommend using the default folder.
Note: Saving sent mail uses up your email quota quickly, especially if it has attachments. We recommend saving only the most important messages.

B. Filters

Click Filters to create and edit filter rules and to set your preferences for applying rules. Filters can help you organize your incoming mail and delete unwanted messages before you see them in your Inbox.

  • Select the check box(es) for the occasions you would like UMail to apply the filters to your mail: Apply filter rules upon logging on and/or Apply filter rules when mailbox is refreshed.
  • Select the check box next to Display message when filters have been applied to receive a notification that your rules have been applied to your mail.
  • Click Edit Your Filter Rules to create rules and edit existing rules.

Creating Filters

To create a filter, go to Rule Definition and complete the following steps:

Create filters window
  1. Select the field (To:, Cc:, From:, etc.) to which you would like to apply a rule by selecting the check box to left of the filter name. If you select more than one field, UMail will look for text in one field OR the other.
  2. Enter the text you wish to scan for when applying the rule. In the example above the phrase: UMail Account Manager has been used.
Note: The text you type in this box (including email addresses) must be exactly what you would like to filter.
  3. Choose the action to perform when the message matches the filter rule: delete message or move message to. If you select move message to, the folder must also be selected for the rule to take effect.
Note: The destination folder must exist prior to creating the rule.

You can also access this screen by selecting an email and clicking Blocklist in the Mailbox Menu - Blocklist creates a rule based upon the sender of that email and then directs you to this screen to finish creating the rule.

Manage Filter Rules

To manage your filters, go to Filter Rules and complete the following steps:

  1. Select the filter rule to manage by selecting the button next to the rule description.
  2. Click one of the action buttons (Delete, Move Up, Move Down) to delete or change the order of filter rules. To edit a rule, select it and modify the information in the Rule Definition fields.
Note: The order of filter rules is important! If an incoming email message can be filtered by more than one rule, only the rule that you have specified as being more important will be applied. Make sure you have the most important rules first (at the top).

C. Message Composition

Click Message Composition to customize how you send mail.

  • Wrap text at this many characters: Change the number in this field if you want to modify the width of viewable text in your email. Changing this to a large number may force your recipients to scroll left to right to read your mail.
  • Include original message in reply: Uncheck this box if you never want to include the text of a message you are replying to in the reply itself.
  • How to prefix quoted lines in a reply:Change the way UMail on the Web displays original messages in a reply. This only appears if you select Include original message in reply: (see above).
  • Compose message in separate window?

Select this box if you want a new window to open when you select Compose, Reply, Reply to All, Forward, or Redirect. If you do not select this box, the screen will refresh with the content for this page and you have to navigate back to the Inbox using the Mailbox Menu.

Note: Having trouble composing or replying to emails? This may be because you have a pop-up blocker activated in your browser. Windows XP Service Pack 2 included updates to Internet Explorer which may affect how your browser handles pop-up windows. To fix the problem, see About Windows XP Service Pack 2.

  • Display confirmation after sending a message? Select this box if you'd like to receive a confirmation that your mail was sent successully. This will only work if you do not select Compose Messages in a Separate Window (see above).
  • Drafts Folder Select which folder you'd like to save your unfinished emails or "drafts" in. We recommend the default Drafts folder, but you can choose any folder from the drop-down menu.
  • Should the compose window be closed after saving a draft? Select this option if you'd like to return to the Inbox after saving a draft.
