Enable/Disable Spam Filtering

Attention! Spam filtering is now automatically enabled for new OIT Accounts. New Account holders can follow the directions below to disable spam filtering.

  1. Open your Web browser and go to the UMail @ UMass page: http://umail.oit.umass.edu/.
  2. On the UMail @ UMass page, click Connect to the UMail Post Office. The UMail Post Office - Login - screen will open
  3. In the UMail Post Office - Login - screen:
    • In the Username: field, enter your NetID (OIT Account user name).
    • In the Password: field, enter your UMail password
    • Once you enter your login information, click Login to the UMail Post Office. The UMail Post Office - Main Lobby - screen will open. See our UMail Post Office documentation for more information about the UMail Post Office.
      Note: You must have a valid OIT Account in order to enable spam filtering. If you do not have an OIT Account or if you cannot remember your password, come to Room A113 LGRC with your UCard.
  4. In the UMail Post Office Main Lobby, click Spam Filtering. The UMail Post Office - Spam Filtering - screen will open.
  5. On the UMail Post Office - Spam Filtering - screen:
    • Select Enable Spam Filtering to turn the filter on or Disable Spam Filtering to turn it off.
    • Select how long you would like to keep the messages in your spam folder: . 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 14 days (the default), 30 days, or Never-I will delete old spam myself.
    • When you finish selecting your desired options, click Update Spam Filtering Options to activate the changes.
  6. If you have chosen to activate the service, a spam folder will appear under your Inbox. All incoming messages will be filtered and those identified as spam will be moved to this folder. Note: If you have previously had this service and have chosen to discontinue it, the Spam folder with all of the tagged email will remain within your Inbox, but new incoming mail will not be filtered.
