Configure for UMail: Outlook Express 6.x for Windows

Software: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.0

Operating System: Win

Note: These instructions follow the version of the software noted above. For other versions, there may be some variation, but the information below should serve as a guide to get you started. To identify the version of your software, look for the About link in the software's main or Help menu.

  1. Open Outlook Express. Go to Tools > Accounts...
  2. In the Internet Accounts window, click the Mail tab (if necessary).
  3. On the Mail tab, click Add, then select Mail...The Internet Connection Wizard will open.
  4. In the Your Name window, in the Display name field, enter your name, then click Next.
    Note: This name will appear in the From field of your outgoing messages.
  5. On the Internet E-mail Address screen, in the E-mail address field, enter your UMail address (e.g.,xxyy@student.umass.edu), then click Next. The E-mail Server Names screen will open.
  6. On the E-mail Server Names screen:
    • Select IMAP as the type of server.
    • In the Incoming mail (POP, IMAP) server field, enter mail-?.oit.umass.edu where ? is the first letter of your OIT Account NetID. For example, if your NetID starts with the letter J, enter mail-j.oit.umass.edu.
    • In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field, enter mail-auth.oit.umass.edu.
    • Click Next. The Internet Mail Logon screen will open.
  7. On the Internet Mail Logon screen:
    • In the Account ID field, enter your NetID.
    • Leave the Password field blank, then click the right arrow.
      Note: We recommend that you do not select Save password. If you do, anyone who has access to your computer can read your email, delete, and send messages in your name.
  8. In the Congratulations window, click Finish. Your new entry will show up in the Internet Accounts window.
  9. In the Internet Accounts window, select your account and click Properties. The Properties window will open.
  10. In the Properties window, click the Advanced tab.
  11. On the Advanced tab:
    • Under Incoming mail (IMAP), select This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The number shown in the field above will automatically change from 143 to 993.
    • Under Outgoing mail (SMTP):, select This server requires a secure connection (SSL) and change the number in the field above from 25 to 465 (this number will not change automatically).
  12. Click the Servers tab. On the Servers tab, under Outgoing mail server, select My server requires authentication, then click Settings.... The Outgoing Mail Server window will open. In the Outgoing Mail Server window, under Logon Information, select Use same settings as my incoming mail server and click OK. You will return to the Properties window, on the Servers tab.
  13. On the Servers tab, click OK. You will return to the Internet Accounts window. Click Close. A window asking: Would you like to download folders from the mail server you added? will appear. Click Yes.
    Note: You will be prompted for your OIT Account password.
  14. To check that your outgoing mail settings are correct, use Outlook Express to send a message to your UMail address. You need to enter your OIT Account password to send the message. The message should appear momentarily in your Outlook Express Inbox.

Congratulations! Outlook Express is now configured to send and receive messages with your UMail account.
