Look up UMass Amherst Email Addresses with Windows Mail for Windows Vista

Overview

The UMass Amherst Directory (LDAP) includes the names and email addresses of students, faculty, and staff at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. These instructions describe how you can configure Windows Mail on a Windows Vista computer to access the directory. You can access the same directory information using People Finder.

Note: These instructions follow the version of the software noted above. For other versions, there may be some variation, but the information below should serve as a guide to get you started. To identify the version of your software, look for the About link in the software's main menu or Help menu.

Configure the UMass Directory

  1. Open Windows Mail.
  2. Go to Tools > Accounts.... The Internet Accounts window will open.
  3. In the Internet Accounts window, click Add (at right). The Select Account Type screen will open.
  4. On the Select Account Type screen, select Directory Service and click Next. The Internet Directory Server Name screen will open.
  5. On the Internet Directory Server Name screen:
    • In the Internet directory (LDAP) server field, enter ldap.oit.umass.edu.
    • Select the check box next to My LDAP server requires me to logon.
    • Click Next (at bottom). The Internet Directory Server Logon window will open.
  6. In the Internet Directory Server Logon window:
    • In the Account name field, enter uid=yournetid, ou=people, dc=umass, dc=edu where yournetid is your NetID
      Note: You can copy and paste this text from this page into Windows Mail, then replace yournetid with your OIT Account NetID

    • In the Password field, enter your OIT Account password.
    • Click OK. The Check Email Addresses window will open.
  7. In the Check Email Addresses window, when asked Do you want to check addresses using this directory service? select No, then click Next. The Congratulations window will open.
  8. In the Congratulations window, click Finish. Your new entry should be displayed in the Internet Accounts window, under Directory Service.
  9. Select ldap.oit.umass.edu from the list of directories, then click Properties (at right). The ldap.oit.umass.edu Properties window will open.
  10. In the ldap.oit.umass.edu Properties window, on the General tab, under Directory Service, enter a new name for this account (e.g., UMass Amherst Directory). This name will appear in the list of directories.
  11. Click the Advanced tab, then:
    • Under Server Port, select the check box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The port number will automatically change from 389 to 636.
    • In the Search Base field, enter ou=people,dc=umass,dc=edu
      Note: To avoid errors, we recommend that you copy and paste the search base information from this screen into the field in your email software.
    • Click OK. You will return to the Internet Accounts window.
  12. In the Internet Accounts window, click Close.

Search the UMass Amherst Directory

  1. In Windows Mail, click Create Mail. A New Message window will open.
  2. In the New Message window, click To:. The Select Recipients window will open.
  3. In the Select Recipients window, click Find... (at the top of screen, under Type name or select from list). The Find People window will open.
  4. In the Find People window:
    • From the Look in drop-down menu, select UMass Amherst Directory.
    • On the People tab, enter all or part of the name and/or email address of the person you want to look up.
  5. Click Find Now to begin the search. If the search is successful, a maximum of thirty (30) results will appear below the search fields.

    Note: Depending upon your search criteria, you may receive an error message saying there are too many entries in the directory service which match your search criteria. Click OK to view the first 30 entries.
