Look up UMass Amherst Email Addresses with Outlook Express 6.x for Windows

Overview

The UMass Amherst Directory (LDAP) includes the names and email addresses of students, faculty, and staff at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. These instructions describe how you can configure Outlook Express on a Windows computer to access the directory. You can access the same directory information using People Finder.

Note: These instructions follow the version of the software noted above. For other versions, there may be some variation, but the information below should serve as a guide to get you started. To identify the version of your software, look for the About link in the software's main menu or Help menu.

Configure the UMass Amherst Directory

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. Go to Tools > Accounts.... The Internet Accounts window will open.
  3. In the Internet Accounts window, select the Directory Service tab.
  4. Click Add, then, from the drop-down menu, select Directory Service. The Internet Connection Wizard will open.
  5. In the Internet Connection Wizard, on the Internet Directory Server Name screen:
    • In the Internet directory (LDAP) server field, enter ldap.oit.umass.edu.
    • Select the check box next to My LDAP server requires me to logon, then click Next. The Internet Directory Server Logon screen will open.
  6. On the Internet Directory Server Logon screen:
    • In the Account name field, enter uid=yournetid,ou=people,dc=umass,dc=edu where yournetid is replaced by your OIT Account NetID.
      Note: To avoid errors, we recommend that you copy and paste this information from this screen into the field in your email software.
    • In the Password field, enter your OIT Account password.
    • Click Next. The Check Email Addresses screen will open.
  7. On the Check Email Addresses screen, when asked Do you want to check addresses using this directory service? , select No, then click Next. The Congratulations screen will open.
  8. On the Congratulations screen, click Finish. You will return to the Internet Accounts window and your new entry will appear in the list of directories.
  9. Select ldap.oit.umass.edu from the list of directories, then click Properties. The ldap.oit.umass.edu Properties window will open.
  10. In the ldap.oit.umass.edu Properties window, on the General tab, enter a new name for this account under Directory Service Account (e.g., UMass Amherst Directory). This name will appear in your list of directories.
  11. Click the Advanced tab, then:
    • Under Server Port Number, select the check box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL). The port number will automatically change from 389 to 636.
    • In the Search Base field, enter ou=people,dc=umass,dc=edu

    Note: To avoid errors, we recommend that you copy and paste the search base information from this screen into the field in your email software.

  12. Click OK. You will return to the Internet Accounts window, click Close.

Search the UMass Amherst Directory

  1. In Outlook Express, click Create Mail to open a New Message window.
  2. In the New Message window, click To:. The Select Recipients window will open.
  3. In the Select Recipients window, click Find... (top of screen under Type name or select from list). The Find People window will open.
  4. In the Find People window:
    • In the Look in drop-down menu, make sure UMass Amherst Directory is selected.
    • On the People tab, enter the name and/or email address of the person you want to search for.
  5. Click Find Now. If the search is successful, a maximum of thirty (30) results will display below the search fields.

    Note: Depending upon your search criteria, you may receive an error message stating Unable to display the complete search results because either too many entries in the directory service match your search criteria... Click OK to view the first 30 entries.

  6. Select the name of the person you wish to write to and click To: ->, CC: ->, or BCC: -> to address the person as desired. You will return to the Select Recipients window.
  7. In the Select Recipients window, make sure that your addressee information is displayed correctly and click OK. You will return to the New Message window, where you can continue composing your email message.
