Class Email Lists

For Students

Starting in September 2005, your courses may include an automatic email list (a.k.a. class email list). Your instructors will use these lists to communicate with everyone in the class. Please remember:

  • Once enrolled in a course, you will be routinely added to a class email list if the instructor chooses to use this new capability. Look for a Welcome message from your instructor.
  • Messages from a class email list will only be sent to your official email address, your UMail address. All students are required to have an active OIT Account and check their UMail regularly for important information related to their courses.

Manage Your List Subscriptions with Mailman

To manage your subscription preferences to any class email list, use Mailman, our list management software. Learn more about Mailman settings for class email list subscribers below.

Access the listinfo Page

The list information (listinfo) page contains everything you need to manage your list membership.

Find the listinfo page at https://list.umass.edu/mailman/listinfo/listname where listname is the name of the list (e.g., ce-engin-290a-01-fal04 in ce-engin-290a-01-fal04@courses.umass.edu).

Use the listinfo page to subscribe or unsubscribe from a list, access a list's archives, or change your settings. To do so, you will be prompted for your Mailman password.
Note:

  • Your Mailman password is a password automatically generated by Mailman. It is not your UMail password or your UMAccess password.
  • Can't remember your Mailman password? Locate the Password Reminder on the Member Options page, then click Remind. Your new password will be emailed to you.

Subscribe to a Class Email List

Once enrolled in a course that uses a class email list, your UMail address will be automatically added to the list. Look for a Welcome message from your instructor.

If you added a course after the end of add/drop, you can use Mailman to subscribe to its email list. Learn how to subscribe to a list.

Unsubscribe from a Class Email List

At the end of each semester, all class email lists are deleted together with your membership to these lists. If you withdraw from a course and no longer wish to receive messages from its email list, use Mailman to unsubscribe. Learn how to unsubscribe from a list .

Note: If you drop a course during add/drop, you will be removed from its email list once the list is refreshed (usually at the end of the registration period).

Post a Message

Before sending a message, ask your instructor whether the email list is configured as a(n):

  • Announcement List. In this case, the list is restricted to announcements from the instructor and you won't be able to post messagees to the list.

- or -

  • Discussion Tool. Open to everyone in the class to contribute.

Archives

All messages sent to a class email list are securely archived for a period of 6 months. In this way, even after a list no longer exists, you still have access to its contents. Please note:

  • No message can exceed 1MB. For sizable attachments, consider uploading them to the Web rather than posting them to the list.
  • Messages are archived in text format. No attachments. No HTML. Make sure you include critical information in the body of your message!

To access a list's archive, go to your listinfo page, then click [listname] archives. You will be prompted for your Mailman password.
