Publish Your UDrive Files as a Web Site

The new UDrive allows you to publish Web site files (HTML, HTM, XML) that others can view online with their browsers. This lets you have an online presence without making your site openly available on the Web. Additionally, you can use UDrive as a development space to test your Web pages before you publish them online. You can then use UDrive's permission settings to limit others' access to your site to suit your needs.

  1. In UDrive, create a new directory for your site; this directory will keep your UDrive organized and allows you to manage your Web files in a more focused manner. See Create Folders for more information.
  2. Once you have created a folder for your Web site, upload your HTML, HTM, or XML files to this folder or move them there if they are already stored in your UDrive. See Upload Files for more information.
  3. Click the Share icon next to the file name to set up the permissions for this directory. See the Permissions section for more information on permission options and access levels.
  4. Send an email or otherwise make the URL for the site known to those whom you want to see your Web site.
Note: The URL for any UDrive folder where you wish to publish a Web site will be:

    udrive.oit.umass.edu/yournetid/thefoldername/thedocumentname.html (or htm, etc...)

For example, if your NetID is idunno and you named your Web site folder scienceproject06 and it contains a file named slideshow.html, the URL for that particular file will be:

    udrive.oit.umass.edu/idunno/scienceproject06/slideshow.html

You can also email links to shared files and folders directly from UDrive to the people you want to invite to your site.

  5. You can password-protect or time-limit your Web site by creating a ticket to determine the access parameters. See Share Files & Folders with Non-UMass People (Tickets) for more information.
  6. Remember that you should make the URL along with the password and time-limit information known to those who will be accessing the content, whether you set up a password, time limit or both.
Important: Other users will need the password to view the indicated content and it will not be available after the time limit you set (if any).
