SPIRE Training Schedule for Staff and Advisors

About SPIRE Training for Staff

New SPIRE for Staff and SPIRE for Advisors users: use this schedule to confirm the date and time of our SPIRE trainings. The training schedule is subject to change.

Note:

  • You can participate in these sessions only once you complete the application process for SPIRE for Staff and the Registrar's Office has approved your request. Learn more about SPIRE access...
  • Pre-registration is required for all classes. Classes will be canceled unless we receive at least one pre-registration by 4 p.m. the day prior to the scheduled training date.
  • Walk-ins for training are not allowed at this time.

SPIRE A: Academic Records

SPIRE A classes train faculty and staff from academic departments how to access students' personal information (e.g., addresses, telephone numbers) and academic records (e.g., majors, advisors, grades, view or manage undergraduate student holds, or class schedules). Hands-on exercises include running unofficial transcripts.

SPIRE Lite: Limited Academic Records

SPIRE Lite classes train staff from non-academic departments how to access and handle students' directory information (e.g., addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses), including checking for privacy restrictions. SPIRE Lite users also receive limited access to students' academic records, including viewing and/or managing undergraduate student holds, depending on job responsibilities.

Graduate Milestones & Committees

Pre-requisite: SPIRE A

Classes train Graduate Program Directors and their staff to view graduate students' progress towards their degrees in SPIRE. The Graduate Milestones page tracks the status of graduate degree requirements (academic and administrative), and the Committees page lists students' committee members.

SPIRE for Advisors

This class shows new advisors how to access students' academic records and personal information, along with how to write and review advising notes. Advisor trainees also learn how to use a powerful tool to help students evaluate the effect of changing their majors.

SPIRE B: Enrollment Overrides

Pre-requisite: SPIRE A

SPIRE B classes provide hands-on training for enrollment overrides. Learn how to enroll students in your department courses by overriding class capacity, requisites, or instructor consent requirements. Also learn how to view your department's class rosters, enter textbook data for classes offered by your department, and monitor departmental compliance with the requirement to post textbook data.

Advisor Assignment

Pre-requisite: SPIRE A

Classes train department representatives to assign academic advisors to undergraduate students majoring in their departments.

Academic Deans' Add-on: Credit Limit Overrides

Pre-requisite: SPIRE A

These workshops train academic deans and their staff to update students' enrollment limits, audit grade changes, and view students’ incompletes.

Query Tool

This class trains academic staff to use pre-written queries, view results online, and download data to their desktop. Registrar's Office approval is required prior to training. Review the available queries in the SPIRE for Staff Query Directory.

Batch Transcripts

This class trains academic staff to run and print batches of unofficial transcripts and other reports for a large number of students. Registrar's Office approval is required prior to training.

Graduate Admissions Documents

To get access to Graduate Admissions documents, you must:

  1. complete the online FERPA Quiz (this link will initiate a prompt to log in to begin the quiz). Be sure to do this before you move on to Step 2. Failure to do so may result in significant delays in activation of your access.
  2. gain approval for the access from the Graduate Admissions office. Your Graduate Program Director should make the request on your behalf by emailing gradreports@grad.umass.edu.

Training is not required to activate this access, but you are welcome to request an individualized help session by emailing
