In accordance with the federal FERPA law, all University employees are legally and ethically obligated to protect the confidentiality of student records. Our FERPA Certification process is designed to ensure that you are familiar with the provisions of the law and that you are prepared for the day-to-day challenges of protecting confidential student information. Please remember that FERPA Certification is required to gain access to SPIRE for Staff or SPIRE for Advisors pages.
Our FERPA Tutorial translates the legal language into simple, easy-to-remember scenarios to help you understand more about FERPA's provisions and how they are applied at UMass Amherst. Review it any time from the comfort of your office before taking the FERPA quiz or as a refresher afterward. Download the tutorial from the list in the right-hand column in either PowerPoint or PDF format. You must have Adobe Reader installed on your computer to view PDF files. If needed, you can download it for free from the Adobe Web site.
Applicants for SPIRE for Staff or SPIRE for Advisors access: We recommend that you take the online FERPA quiz as soon as possible. Do be sure to take it before you attend the first SPIRE training for which you have been approved. Your new access will not be activated following training until you have completed FERPA Certifcation.
The Academic Regulations handbook publishes the University's official guidelines for releasing student information. Look for Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act.
