Install McAfee Security & Scan Your Computer for Viruses (Macintosh)

McAfee Security is a program you can use to protect your computer files, programs, and email from viruses and malicious software (malware).

Note: These instructions are for the version of McAfee Security available for students and use on personal, non-University-owned computers.

Obtain & Install McAfee Security

  1. McAfee Security is available at no cost to members of the UMass Amherst Community. Go to our McAfee Security Download page and click McAfee Security (at right).
Note: You will be prompted for your IT Account NetID and password before downloading software.
  2. Once the download is complete, the installer will attempt to run automatically. You may be prompted to allow the program to determine whether it can be installed on your computer. Click Continue to begin the installation.
Note: If the installer does not start automatically on your computer, find and double-click the McAfee_Security.dmg file on your computer. The installer will mount as a drive on your computer and a McAfee Security for Mac... window will open. Double-click the McAfee Security for Mac-Anti-malware-1.1-RTW-1309 file to start the installation.
  3. Follow the installation prompts. When prompted to select a location for the VirusScan files, select your Mac OS X hard drive. You will be prompted for the Administrator name and password for your computer.
  4. When complete, an Install Succeeded message will appear. Click Close.

Update Virus Definitions

Updating your virus definitions will ensure that McAfee Security recognizes new forms of malicious software. It is essential that you update your files to keep your computer virus free.

McAfee has a built-in feature that automatically downloads and installs updates for you, but you can also update your virus definitions manually:

  1. Connect to the Internet.
  2. Go to Applications > McAfee Security. The McAfee Security window will open.
  3. In the McAfee Security window, click Update Now (at left), then click Start Update. When the update is complete, a Last Update Status: Successful message will appear on the screen.

Automatic Scanning & Updates

To configure McAfee Security to perform updates and scan your computer automatically:

  1. Go to Applications > McAfee Security. McAfee Security will open.
  2. Once McAfee Security is open, on the Apple toolbar, go to McAfee Security > Preferences.... The McAfee Security preferences window will open, on the General screen.
  3. On the General screen, click the lock (bottom left) to make changes to your McAfee Security settings. You will be prompted for the Administrator name and password for your computer.
  4. On the General screen, make sure that On-access Scan: is set to ON, then click the Anti-malware button (at top). The Anti-malware screen will open, on the On-access Scan tab.
  5. On the Anti-malware screen:
    • On the On-access Scan tab, from the Scan files while: drop-down menu, select Read & Write, then next to Also scan:, check the box next to Archives & Compressed Files. Note: Make sure that the box next to Apple Mail Messages is not checked.
    • Click the On-demand Scan tab, then make sure that next to Also scan:, the box next to Archives & Compressed Files is checked.
  6. On the McAfee Security preferences window, click the Update button (at top). The Update screen will open.
  7. On the Update screen, click the Schedule tab, then under Check for anti-malware update, select how often and at what time you wish to have McAfee Security search for updates to your virus and malware definitions. We recommend Daily, at a time of your choosing.
  8. On the preferences window, click Apply (bottom right), then click the Close button (top left).

Scan Your Computer

We recommend that you run full scans of your computer often (at least monthly) to keep it clean and secure.

  1. Go to Applications > McAfee Security. The McAfee Security window will open.
  2. In the McAfee Security window, under Protection (at left), click Scan Now. The Scan Now screen will open.
  3. On the Scan Now screen:
    • From the drop-down menu under What to scan, select your entire hard drive. This is often labeled as Macintosh HD, but it may vary. It is represented by a gray hard drive icon.
Note: If you have more than one hard drive installed on your computer, you will have to run separate scans for each.
    • Click Start Scan (upper right). McAfee Security will begin scanning your computer for malware and will alert you of any threats it detects.
