Access to Moodle for Students

This page reviews how students gain access to a course in Moodle.

Student Enrollment in Moodle Courses

Once the instructor for a class requests a Moodle course, students who are enrolled in the class in SPIRE will automatically be added to the roster in Moodle. Moodle course rosters are updated automatically each hour with enrollment data from SPIRE.
Note: There may be up to a 1 hour delay between when a student registers for a course and when that student appears in the Moodle roster.

Logging in to Moodle

Students should log into Moodle using their NetID (OIT Account user name and password). For more see Logging in to Moodle.

Note:

  • If a student has no courses that use Moodle they will be able to log in to Moodle but will not see any courses listed under My Courses.
  • Moodle courses will automatically be released to students three days prior to the beginning of courses. However, Moodle gives instructors the ability to hide or show their courses outside of the institutional schedule. This can be used by instructors to hide courses that are not ready for use or to open courses prior to the beginning of the semester.

5-College Student Access to Moodle

To access a course in Moodle, 5-college students must:

  • Appear in SPIRE as being registered for the course.
  • Log in to Moodle using their NetID (OIT Account user name) and password.

Note: 5-college students who are enrolled in a UMass course will be sent a NetID (OIT Account user name) and password via email as soon as their enrollment appears in SPIRE. More about OIT Accounts.

Troubleshooting Tips

There are a few possible situations that could cause a student who is registered for a course in SPIRE to be unable to log in to the Moodle course. Some troubleshooting to consider:

  • Check your course schedule in SPIRE to esure the course is using Moodle and not UMassOnline (click the URL icon next to the course in your course list).
  • There may be up to a 1 hour delay between when a student registers for a course and when that student can access the Moodle course. Note: Moodle course rosters are updated with student data from SPIRE only on weekdays.
  • The student must have an active OIT Account. Students can get help with their NetID and password by coming in person with their student ID card to the OIT Help Center (A109 LGRC).

Access to a Moodle course for an Incomplete or Independent Study

If an instructor wishes to provide access to a Moodle course from a previous semester in order for a student to fulfill requirements for an Incomplete, they can assign them a special Role in the course that gives them access to the closed course. See Assign Roles to Individuals in Your Moodle Course.

If an instructor wishes to provide access to a current Moodle course in order for a student to fulfill requirements for an Independent Study, the instructor must complete the form to Request Contributor Access to Moodle
