SecureCRT for Windows

Software: SecureCRT 5.x

Operating System: Win

SecureCRT is a terminal emulation application used to access remote computers such as UMass Amherst's OIT's Web hosting server. SecureCRT is SSH2-compliant and encrypts all data passed between a remote host and your personal computer.

Obtain and Install SecureCRT

  1. SecureCRT is available at no cost to members of the UMass community. You can obtain a copy from our SecureCRT download page, then follow the rest of the instructions below.
  2. Double-click the SecureCRT file to run it. Follow the directions on the screen.
Windows Vista Users: Before you can install this program, Windows Vista may present you with a User Account Control window, asking you for permission to proceed. Click Allow to continue installing the software.
  3. We recommend that you accept the default folder and filenames.
  4. When the Choose Protocols screen appears, make sure you clear the rlogin and serial check boxes. Then, click Next.
  5. SecureCRT is now ready to connect to a host.

Connect to OIT's Web hosting server

  1. If you are off-campus, dial in to OIT to establish a connection. (If you are connected to the campus network, make sure your connection is working.)
  2. Start SecureCRT. SecureCRT brings up the Connect screen. Your version of SecureCRT from OIT comes pre-configured for connecting to OIT's Web hosting server and the University Library.
  3. Select OIT's Web hosting server connection.
  4. In the Connect window, click the Properties icon (at the top, the fourth icon from the right).
  5. On the Session Options Window - OIT'S Web hosting server, make sure ssh2 is showing in the Protocol: field. Click OK to close the Session Options Window.
  6. In the Connect window, select the connection you want, then click Connect.
  7. The first time you connect, SecureCRT will give you an error message because webadmin.oit.umass.edu is an alias to several hosts. Click Accept & Save.
  8. Next, enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and OIT Account password.
  9. You now have a Secure Shell (SSH) connection to OIT's Web hosting server.
