Add Classes

Some useful tips for adding classes:

  • Keep an eye for multiple components (e.g., discussions or labs).
In the Schedule of Classes, related components are listed under the lecture, with Discussion or Laboratory in the Section field. Learn more about adding classes with related components
  • Check for requisites, instructor consent, and other enrollment restrictions.
In the Schedule of Classes, restricted classes have a yellow Yes button (Yes button) in the Restrictions column. Click Yes to view these restrictions on the Class Detail page (under Restrictions & Notes). If you don't meet the requirements, you cannot add a restricted course in SPIRE. Contact the instructor or the academic department instead.

Step 1: Select the class(es) you wish to add

  1. In the left Menu, go to Enrollment > Add Classes. The Select classes to add page will open.
  2. On the Select classes to add page:
    • Make sure the page displays the correct term.
    • In the Enter Class Nbr field, enter the Class Number for the class you wish to add, then click enter. The Enrollment Preferences page will open.
Note: The Class Number is a 5-digit identifier for a class. All components of a class (e.g., lectures, discussions, etc.) have their own Class Numbers. Class Numbers change from one semester to the next, even for the same class.

    - or -

    • From the Search for Class drop-down list, select Search for Classes, then click search to retrieve the Class Number from the Schedule of Classes. On the Search Results page, click select class to 'grab' a class. You will be redirected to the Enrollment Preferences page.
  3. On the Enrollment Preferences page:
    • If the class is closed, a SPIRE waitlist is available, and you wish to add yourself to this waitlist, click the Wait List check box.
    • Leave the Permission Nbr field blank. Most classes do not require one.
    • If you wish to be graded differently for this class, from the Grading drop-down list, select a different grading basis (e.g., Elective Pass/Fail Grading).
    • (Variable-credit classes only) From the Units drop-down list, select the number of credits you wish to take for this class (up to 6).
    • (Independent studies only) From the Instructor drop-down list, select a different instructor. Instructors' names are listed alphabetically.
    • Click Next. You will return to the Select classes to add page.
  4. On the Select classes to add page, the class you have just selected appears under Enrollment Requests (mid-page). To add this class to your schedule, click Proceed to Step 2 of 3. The Confirm classes page will open.

Step 2: Confirm your class selection

  1. On the Confirm classes page, review the class(es) you have selected, then click Finish Enrolling. The View results page will open.

Step 3: View results

  1. On the View results page, review the status of your add request:
    • A green check mark (success) indicates that you successfully added the class to your schedule.
    • A red cross mark (failure) indicates an error. Carefully read the message associated with this error, and click Fix Errors if this is an error that you can fix yourself (e.g., a time conflict that you could resolve by dropping another class, etc.). You will return to the Select classes to add page. If this is an error that you cannot fix, contact the academic department that offers this class or the Registrar's Office (213 Whitmore, 413.545.0555) for more information.
Note: Remember to delete any 'unfixable' classes from your Enrollment Requests. Otherwise, SPIRE will try to re-add them when you click Proceed to Step 2 of 3 next, and you will get an error every time.
Click My Class Schedule to view your current class schedule.
