Query Tips

Occasionally, the SPIRE for Staff queries may time out or take several minutes to complete. Some of you may have received a "System Error" message while attempting to run the Major List Query. As we work to make the Major List Query faster and more reliable, please remember:

Make sure SPIRE is the only application running on your desktop

Running multiple programs at the same time (e.g., Excel, email, etc.) will slow down your computer. This also affects the time SPIRE needs to successfully run a query. When using the Query Tool, make sure SPIRE is the only program running on your computer.

Clear your browser's cache

Clearing your browser's cache means deleting what's stored in the browser's memory (i.e., files, cookies, browsing history). For best results, we recommend that you periodically clear your browser's cache when working with SPIRE. Learn how....

Log off SPIRE, then immediately log back on

If you get a "System Error" message, close the Query window, then log off SPIRE. Immediately log back on and try to run the query.

You may find this tip useful for the Major List Query. This query is unusually sensitive to database cache: if it fails the first time, you may be successful the second time because most of the query's data are already stored in the browser's memory.
