Email Addresses

Use these pages to learn how to add/update your email addresses in SPIRE.

Types of email addresses

Official UMass email address

In SPIRE you can view your official email address. If you have an OIT Account, UMail, i.e., your OIT-assigned email, is your official email address. If you have a departmental email address, you can designate it as your preferred email address (see below "Select a preferred email address").

Please remember:

  • You receive your UMail address when you activate your OIT Account.
  • Note to graduate students: UMail remains your official email address, even if you also have a departmental email address.
  • For questions about or to change your official OIT email address (UMail), submit an online Help Request .

Departmental UMass Email Address

You may have received a departmental email address if you are affiliated with a UMass department that maintains its own email system (e.g., Computer Science), one of the Five Colleges, another UMass campus, or the President's Office. Check the list of OIT-approved departmental email addresses if you are not sure.

Non-UMass email address

These are email addresses from commercial providers, not affiliated with the University.

Add/update email addresses in SPIRE

  1. In the left Menu, go to My Personal Information > Email Addresses. The Email Addresses page will open. If you have a UMail address, that is labeled OIT/UMail.
  2. To add a departmental email address:
    • From the *Email Type drop-down menu, select UMass Dept Managed/5College.
    • In the *Email Address field, enter your address.
    • Click Save, then OK to confirm the save.
  3. To add a non-UMass email address:
    • From the *Email Type drop-down menu, select Non-UMass.
    • In the *Email Address field, enter your address.
    • Click Save, then OK to confirm the save.

Select a preferred email address

Your UMail email address, if you have one, is automatically listed in People Finder and the UMass Amherst print directory. To make a different email address available in People Finder and the print directory:

  1. Select the Preferred check box next to the address of your choice, then click Save.

Please note:

  • UMass staff and faculty must choose to publish either a UMail or a departmental email address. An exception to publish a non-UMass email is made for off-campus but related entities (e.g., Mass Ventures or the Newman Center); otherwise, only UMass retirees can opt to publish a non-UMass email address.
  • Any changes to your email information will appear in People Finder within two business days and in the next available print directory.
  • Your UMail address is automatically listed in People Finder and the print directory unless you select the Preferred check box for a departmental email address.
