Mathematica @ UMass

What is Mathematica?

Developed by Wolfram Research, Mathematica "seamlessly integrates a numeric and symbolic computation engine, graphics system, programming language, documentation system and advanced connectivity to other applications." The power and function this software provides have made it the software of choice for the Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, and Social Science fields. See the Wolfram Web site for more information.

How can I get a copy?

UMass Amherst licenses and distributes Mathematica to faculty and staff on the UMass Amherst and UMass Dartmouth campuses. UMass Dartmouth has a site administrator on-campus who handles the dissemination of the software.

UMass Amherst faculty and staff fill out a registration form, then return it with the appropriate payment to their Site Administrator.

Note: Students can purchase the Student Version from the University Store or directly from Wolfram Research. For more information for students who wish to purchase Mathematica, see this promotional flyer (PDF, 397 KB).

How much does it cost?

The UMass price per copy is $150.00 for all platforms including the UNIX Workstation and the Server Module and Node. Compare this to the standard educational prices for this product:

Standard Educational Prices

  • Mac, Linux, or Windows: $ 895.00
  • UNIX Workstation: $1995.00
  • Server Module: $ 500.00
  • Server Node: $1165.00

Which versions do you distribute?

OIT currently distributes version 4.2 and the new version 5.2. OIT encourages all Mathematica users to acquire and run version 5.2 unless their system will not run this version. Please review the Wolfram Web page on Platform Availability to ensure you are requesting the appropriate version for your use.

What does the site license include?

The license period starts August 11, 2005 and runs through September 20, 2006. The software is set to "time out" at the end of the license period and will not function until the next year's fee is paid and a new password is acquired.

Please note that the UMass Amherst Math/Stat Department and the College of Engineering pay a set fee to cover unlimited use of the product for their faculty and staff, and have their own site administrator for managing their copies of the application.

Please read the Mathematica License Agreement before purchasing the site license or installing the product.

The UMass Amherst site license includes:

  • One copy of the Mathematica software on CD for each individual who purchases the Windows, Macintosh or Linux version
  • One free home-use copy: Faculty members may request their home license and download a copy of Mathematica or order a CD by following this link: http://www.wolfram.com/solutions/highered/homeuse.cgi
Note: OIT will verify your status during the request process.
  • UNIX Workstation CD is available upon request
  • webMathematica Amateur: a limited number of licenses for webMathematica Amateur, for those who wish to showcase their work over the Web, available at no additional cost. Contact your site administrator for more information on obtaining this product.
  • Training Discount: a limited number of discount certificates for individuals who want to take training with Wolfram on the Mathematica products. See the Wolfram course calendar for topics, places and dates. Our certificates are good for a $100 discount on a 2-day course or $50 on a one-day course. Contact your site administrator for more information on obtaining a certificate.
  • Mathematica Journal: a free online subscription to the Mathematica Journal (normal cost is $35.00). To access the Journal, go to the Premier Services page, select the Mathematica Journal link, and enter your University site license number. Electronic copies can replace your normal subscription, unless you still want a complete hard copy.
