SpyBot Search & Destroy can detect and remove various adware and other malicious programs and installations from your computer. SpyBot is distributed free of charge by its developer. To download the software, go to: www.safer-networking.org.

We recommend using SpyBot if:

• your computer has been running slowly,
• you are seeing a lot of pop-ups,
• you are sharing a computer.

We also recommend that you use SpyBot Search & Destroy in conjunction with Ad-Aware 2008 since one program can often catch spyware the other has overlooked. See our Ad-Aware documentation for more information.

Note: The following are instructions for running SpyBot for the first time. If you have used SpyBot before, skip to Run a Routine SpyBot Scan.

1. On the SpyBot Search & Destroy home page, click the icon next to Spybot Search & Destroy. The SpyBot Search & Destroy home page will open.
2. On the SpyBot Search & Destroy home page, from the Download section, click Download next to SpyBot Search & Destroy.
3. The Mirror Selection page will open, where you will have to choose from the list of available download locations or download from a mirror hosted by Safer-Networking. We recommend choosing a mirror hosted by Safer-Networking.
4. Next to the location you have chosen, select Download, then Download SpyBot Search & Destroy.
5. A File Window - Security Warning window will open, asking if you wish to save the download. Click Save. Depending how you've set up your browser, the file will download to the default location on your computer or you will be prompted to choose a location to save it to.
6. Open SpyBot Search & Destroy from where you've saved it. An open executable file window may open. Click OK.
7. An Open File - Security Warning window will open. Click Run.
8. Follow the installation prompts.
   Note: In the Select Additional Tasks window, be sure to uncheck Use system settings protection (Teatimer).
9. Once the installation is complete, a Completing the SpyBot Search & Destroy Setup Wizard window will open. Click Finish.
10. Open SpyBot Search & Destroy. A Legal Stuff window will open. Click OK. If you don't want this message to appear each time you open SpyBot, select Don't show this message again, then click OK.
11. A SpyBot Search & Destroy window will open. You will have the option to create a backup of your registry.
    Note: The registry is a database which stores all of your computer's configuration data. We recommend that you click Create registry backup. You may have to wait a few minutes for the backup to complete. Once this is complete, click Next.
12. You will be prompted to search for updates before completing your first scan. Click Download all available updates and click Next when complete.
13. You will be prompted to immunize you system (i.e., protect your system against spyware by patching your browser's security vulnerabilities). Close all open browser windows, then click Immunize this system. Click Next when the immunization is finished.

You have now finished setting up SpyBot Search & Destroy.

We recommend that you run a routine SpyBot scan once a week.

1. Open SpyBot Search & Destroy. (A Legal Stuff window may open. Click OK.)
2. The SpyBot Search & Destroy window will open. Click Search for Updates.
   Note: If no updates are available, proceed to step 8.
3. A Spybot S&D Wizard window will open, asking you to create a backup of your registry. Click Create a backup of your registry. Once the backup is complete, click Next.
4. You will be asked to search for updated files to download. Click Search for Updates to proceed.
5. A Sybot-S&D Updater window will open asking you to choose a location to download the files from. Click Continue to download the files from the default location.
6. Another Sybot-S&D Updater window will open, listing available updates. Select the updates you'd like to download and click Download.
7. After these updates have been installed, in the Sybot-S&D Updater window, click Exit. A SpyBot Search & Destroy: Search & Destroy window will open.
8. In the SpyBot Search & Destroy: Search & Destroy window, select the Check for problems icon (the magnifying glass). This will run a routine scan which may take several minutes.
9. Once this scan is complete, you may see a list of problems in the Problem field. Select all problems you would you like SpyBot to fix and click Fix selected problems.
10. Once Spybot S&D has finished removing the malware from your computer, a Confirmation window will open. To confirm the removal of these problems, click Yes.

You have now completed a routine SpyBot scan.

SpyBot's Immunize Tool is designed to prevent new spyware infections by patching your browser's security holes. You should still run routine SpyBot scans once a week.

1. Close any browsers running on your computer. Open SpyBot Search & Destroy. (A Legal Stuff window may open. Click OK.)
2. A SpyBot Search & Destroy window will open. In the left column, select Immunize.
   Note: A Warning window may open describing potential protections that may take place during the immunization. Click OK.
3. An Immunize window will open. Click Immunize (marked by a green plus sign) at the top of the screen. SpyBot will begin immunizing your system which may take several minutes.

You have now configured SpyBot's Immunization Tool.
