Install & Configure Virex 7.x for Macintosh OS 10.1.x - 10.3.x

Software: Virex 7.x

Operating System: Mac OS 10.x

Obtain and Install Virex

  1. Virex 7.x is available at no cost to members of the UMass Community. On our Virex 7.x page click Download and then follow the rest of the installation instructions below.
Note: If you are downloading this software from off-campus using a non-UMass ISP (Internet Service Provider), you are required to enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMail password before downloading software.
  2. Once the download is complete, open the Virex 7.x folder on your desktop and double click on the Virex7.x.pkg installer file. Follow the installation prompts.
  3. In the Authenticate window, insert the Administrator name and password for your computer. Click OK and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. When prompted to select a location for the Virex files, we recommend the Applications folder on your Mac OS X hard drive.
  5. Click Install (or Upgrade, if you have an earlier version already installed).
  6. When the installation is complete, click Close.

Update Virus Definitions

Updating your virus definitions will ensure that Virex 7.x recognizes new forms of malicious software and detects new virus strains. It is essential that you update your files to keep your computer virus free.

Virex 7.x has a built-in feature that automatically downloads and installs updates for you. You will be prompted to launch the next update in Virex's main log.

  1. Connect to the Internet (if you are using UMass Ethernet, you are already connected).
  2. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications > Virex 7.x.
  3. Click eUpdate (in the upper right corner). Enter your Administrator password (i.e. the password associated with your Macintosh) to start the update.
  4. Once the update is complete, Virex will log the date in its Results box.
Note: Expect the update to take several minutes. To increase your computer's response time during the update, minimize the Virex 7.x window.

Automatic Scans & Updates

To configure Virex 7.x to scan your computer and perform updates automatically:

  1. In the Virex 7.x window, click Preferences.
  2. Under Scan, select Automatically scan at login. Under Virus Update, select Check for new virus definitions at launch.
  3. Click OK. Virex 7.x is now configured to scan your computer and perform updates automatically.
