We strongly recommend that you update your operating system on a regular basis with the latest security patches, updates and drivers. This will ensure that your computer is up-to-date and will help prevent against viruses and other security breaches.
Windows
Use the Windows Update Web Site
- Go to Start > Windows Update. The Windows Update Web site <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/> will open.
- Click Scan for Updates. Windows Update will scan you computer to see which updates you need.
- When the scan is complete, Windows Update will tell you if there are any critical updates available. We recommend that you always download the latest critical updates. There may also be other updates available for the operating system and/or drivers. To access these, choose the category from the left side of the screen.
- To set your computer to automatically update with the latest critical updates and drivers, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Automatic Updates.
Have OIT Automatically Update Your Computer
OIT can now push Windows critical updates to Windows 2000 and XP computers on the UMass network.
- Download OIT Registry settings. Right-click the <AutomaticUpdates.reg> link and select Save Link As (Firefox) or Save Target As (Internet Explorer) from the drop-down menu.
- When the download is complete, locate the file on your computer and double-click it to open it.
- A dialog box will open asking you if you want to add this file to your registry, click Yes.
Macintosh
Macintosh 10.x
- Go to the Apple Menu > System Preferences.
- On the System Preferences window, under System, select Software Update.
- On the Software Update page, click the Update Software tab, then click Update Now.
To set your computer to automatically update the operating system:
- Select Automatically check for updates when you have a network connection.
- In the drop-down menu, choose how ofter you would like to check for updates (Daily, Weekly or Monthly). We recommend that you choose Weekly.
Macintosh 9.x
To update your Macintosh OS 9.x computer, you will have to go to the Apple Web site <http://www.info.apple.com/usen/macos9/>. We recommend that you check this Web site often to make sure you have the latest updates.
