Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month! In support of this national initiative, the Office of Information Technologies (OIT) is sponsoring a number of events designed to help faculty, staff, and students protect their computers and their personal information from online threats. Give your computer a check up at one of our Security Clinics, attend a panel discussion on computing security, stop by our table in the Campus Center, or just check out our online resources.

Give your computer a check up! Bring your laptop or desktop* computer to the Learning Commons every Thursday during the month of October. OIT Help Desk staff will step you through the simple processes used by OIT and other industry professionals to fix compromised computers and protect them in the future. You'll also receive valuable tools and instructions that you can use at the Security Clinic and afterward.

* No need to bring your monitor,keyboard, and mouse. Help Services will supply them.

Cyber Security Panel Discussion

Four UMass Amherst staff members will provide insights into the computing security issues that affect UMass Amherst faculty, students, and staff. Panelists will be:

  • Marilyn Billings, W.E.B. Du Bois Library
  • Lisa Kent, Student Legal Services
  • Eileen Stewart, Dean of Students Office
  • Mark Whelihan, UMass Police Department

Making Copyright Less Scary: A Halloween Lunch for Faculty

October 31, 11:30 am - 12:45 pm, (A215 LGRC)

Members of OIT's Academic Computing staff will provide an overview of the “rules” of copyright and fair use, then show off some of the many sources for public-domain materials. Bring your own favorite source of public-domain materials, we'll provide the lunch and treats.
