About the OITUNIX Decommissioning

The Office of Information Technologies (OIT) permanently disabled access to OITUNIX, our UNIX-based server, on August 9, 2007. This server was host to many OIT services, including Pine and statistical software packages, but most members of the UMass community probably knew it as the server that hosts personal and course Web sites. We moved many of the services, including our Web hosting services, to new servers. Other services, such as Pine, were discontinued because they were underutilized.

The decision to turn off access to OITUNIX comes as we re-think our Web hosting services and the Web-based tools we provide. In the coming months, we will be introducing new features to our Web hosting service and formally announcing our new Blogging software.

Below, is a list of the services that were hosted on OITUNIX and descriptions of what happened to them when OITUNIX was decommissioned.
