Voice over IP (VoIP) Telephone Service Available to North Residents

Students living in the North Residence Halls are invited to participate in OIT’s Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) pilot project. Using VoIP, you can make and receive telephone calls on your computer from anywhere on campus where there is a wired Internet connection.

About the VoIP Pilot

VoIP provides telephone service over the campus network instead of over traditional phone lines. Account holders use software (called a ‘softphone’) on their computers to manage their calls instead of using a phone or a handset. Additional features include a Web interface for voicemail, voicemail sent to subscribers’ UMail accounts and call forwarding/transfer to local numbers.

During Spring 2008, OIT is sponsoring a pilot project of VoIP telephony in the North Residence Halls. If you a North resident, you can be one of the first students on campus to use this technology.
