Alert! Critical Update for Windows Computers

Microsoft has just released updates which fix vulnerabilities in its operating systems and some applications. OIT strongly recommends that you run Windows Update to download and install these updates. For more information on the update, go to Microsoft Security Bulletin.

Alert! Critical Update for Windows Computers

Microsoft has just released a patch which fixes vulnerabilities in all of its operating systems. It is critical that you run Windows Update to download and install this patch as quickly as possible to protect your computer and the campus network against a new and potentially serious virus.

To download and install the patch:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Go to the Windows Update Web site: http://www.update.microsoft.com/
(You may be asked to update Internet Explorer or install ActiveX components. Follow the directions on the screen.)
3. Click Express. Windows Update will check for updates.
4. The Review your Installation Results screen will open showing the critical update (KB958644), plus any other updates available for your computer. Click Install Updates.

OIT is hard at work updating the computers we manage on campus. LAN Support has contacted its department clients and their computers are in the process of being updated. OIT Computer Classrooms computers will be updated by the end of the day.

We do not typically alert the campus when new software patches are released. The severity of the vulnerabilities, the timing of the patch’s release, and direct communications from Microsoft have prompted us to contact you.
