The Office of Information Technologies (OIT) has recently implemented a new, more robust spam filtering system for UMail. Features of the new system include:
- Identifying messages from known spammers and diverting them to a spam folder
- Screening outgoing attachments for viruses
- Notifying users when their outgoing messages contain a virus
Spam filtering is activated by default for all OIT Accounts. Spam folders are automatically purged every 14 days. To check whether your spam filtering is enabled or change how your spam folder is purged, log in to the UMail Post Office.
We recommend that you periodically check your spam folder for legitimate messages that may have been incorrectly labeled as spam (also known as false positives). Report false positives to false-positive@oit.umass.edu (include the message subject line and sender's address only, not the entire message).
To report a phishing attack (fraudulent emails asking for your personal information), forward them as an attachment to abuse@oit.umass.edu.
Please contact the OIT Help Center with any questions.
