Installing & Configuring Your VPN Client

Windows 2000, XP, & Vista

Software: Cisco VPN 4.x

Operating System: Win 2000, Win XP, Win Vista

Step 1: Obtain & Install Cisco VPN Client Software

  1. Cisco VPN is available to members of the UMass Community at no cost from the Supported Software & Downloads for Windows page. Please check the System Requirements first.
  2. On the Supported Software & Downloads for Windows page, find Cisco VPN (under VPN), then click Download.

Note: If you are connecting to the Internet using a non-UMass Internet Service Provider (ISP), you will need to enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMAccess password before downloading this software.

  3. In the File Download window, click Save. We recommend that you save the vpnclient-win-is-4.7.00.0533-k9.exe file under C:\Program Files.
  4. Once the download is complete, double-click the vpnclient-win-is-4.7.00.0533-k9.exe file. The WinZip Self-Extractor - vpnclient-win-is-4.7.00.0533-k9.exe window will open.
  5. Choose the location where you would like to unzip files. We recommend creating a vpn folder under C:\Program Files. Click Unzip.
  6. Open the vpn folder and double-click the Setup.exe file. The InstallShield Wizard for VPN Client will open. Follow the on-screen instructions. Note: If you have a previous version of Cisco VPN already installed, the wizard will uninstall it, then prompt you to reboot your computer.
  7. Once the download is complete, the InstallShield Wizard for VPN Client will prompt you to restart your computer. Select Yes, I want to restart my computer now, then click Finish.
  8. When the system comes back, there should be a Cisco Systems VPN Client group in the Start > Programs menu.

Step 2: Configure Cisco VPN Client Software

  1. Go to Start > Programs > Cisco Systems VPN Client > VPN Client.
  2. In the VPN Client - version 4.x window, click New at the top to add a new connection entry.
  3. In the VPN Client | Create New VPN Connection Entry window:
    • In the Connection Entry: field, enter a name for this connection. We recommend UMass Wireless.
    • In the Host: field, enter the host name for the VPN server: vpn1.oit.umass.edu
  4. In the VPN Client | Create New VPN Connection Entry window, on the Authentication tab, select Group Authentication, then:
    • In the Name field, enter: wireless
    • In the Password field, enter: : wireless
    • In the Confirm Password field, enter: : : wireless
  5. Click Save.
  6. In the VPN Client - version 4.x window, under the Connection Entries tab, look for the new connection (UMass Wireless). If it is visible, you have successfully created a new Virtual Private Networking connection.

Step 3: Log in to the UMass Wireless Network

To connect to the UMass wireless network, you'll need to identify yourself as a member of the UMass community. Note: You must log in before you connect with the VPN client. To do so:

  1. Turn on or re-start your computer.
  2. Open an Internet browser (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer).
  3. Attempt to access a Web page.
  4. If your computer and wireless card are correctly configured, you will see the UMass wireless network log-in screen.
  5. In the fields on the left-hand side of the screen, enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMAccess password.
  6. If successful, you will be briefly directed to a confirmation screen and then to the Web page you tried to access.

Step 4: Connect to the VPN Server

  1. Go to Start > Programs > Cisco Systems VPN Client > VPN Client.
  2. In the VPN Client - version 4.x window, under the Connection Entry tab, select UMass Wireless. Click Connect at the top of the window.
  3. The VPN Client will attempt to establish a connection to the VPN server. In the VPN Client/User Authentication for "UMass Wireless" window, enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMAccess password, then click OK.
  4. You will see login banner that reads: Connection Successful! Click Continue to complete the login process.

Note: There is an idle timeout of 30 minutes on your VPN session. This means that if you establish a VPN connection and then don't use any network software for 30 minutes, you will be automatically disconnected from the VPN server. If this happens, you will see a pop-up window that reads: Your IPSec connection has been terminated by the remote peer. You will need to reconnect to the VPN server.

  5. To disconnect from the VPN Server, double-click the yellow Cisco VPN Client icon on the desktop taskbar (near the clock). Click Disconnect to log off.
