Using VPN Clients for Wireless Connections

What is a VPN client?

Virtual Private Networking (VPN) client software creates a secure connection between your computer and the UMass network. VPN clients encrypt all data passed between your computer and destinations within UMass, making it very difficult for data to be intercepted and read. This software is particularly when used with a wireless connection, where data is sent "through the air".

Why use VPN clients for wireless?

Use of VPN clients while on the UMass wireless network is optional. We recommend that you use Virtual Private Networking (VPN) clients while using the wireless network when using an application that does not have built-in encryption (e.g., AOL Instant Messenger) or when you feel you need added security.

You do not need to use a VPN client when connecting to UMass applications that require you to enter personal information (e.g., UMail on the Web, SPIRE). These applications are encrypted using SSL (Secure Socket Layer) technology.

Note: Using a VPN client creates a secure "tunnel" between your computer and the UMass network. Information passed to applications and Web sites (including non-UMass email providers) outside of the UMass network will not be encrypted.
