Connect to UMASS-SECURE1X
OIT has launched a new, more secure, convenient, and faster, way to connect to the UMass Amherst wireless network - UMASS-SECURE1X. This new SSID (also known as a network name) is currently available from anywhere on campus with wireless coverage.
About the UMASS-SECURE1X SSID
- UMASS-SECURE1X is the recommended way to connect to the UMass Amherst wireless network. While the UMASS SSID will still be available for now, OIT will slowly be restricting its use.
- To connect, members of the campus community must first configure client software, also known as supplicants, on their laptops or other wireless devices.
- Wireless guests cannot connect using UMASS-SECURE1X.
- Connecting to UMASS-SECURE1X is not recommended for shared computers.
Why Use UMASS-SECURE1X?
- Secure, encrypted network access. Unlike the UMASS SSID, all data passed between a device and a wireless access point is encrypted, making it hard for hackers to intercept emails, files, and other data sent over the network.
- Convenient login. After the initial set up is complete, you will be able to access the wireless network automatically each time you start your computer. You will not have to log in (and log in again) using the wireless login Web page.
- Fast Connection. Your connection could be faster than plugging in to an Ethernet jack. Note: Connection speeds vary depending upon several factors, including location, type of wireless card and how many people are sharing an access point.
