Step 1: Configure Network Software to Use Wireless Card
- Go to Settings > Control Panels > Network.
- On the Network control panel, right-click on the icon for the wireless card/connection (e.g., Wireless Network Connection, ORiNOCO PC Card) and select Properties. The Wireless Network Connection Properties window will appear.
- Under This connection uses the following items:, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties.
- On the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Propteries window, select Obtain an IP address automatically.
- Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties window. Keep the Wireless Network Connection Properties window open and proceed to the next step
Step 2 : Configure Wireless Card to Connect to the UMass Network
- On the Network Connection Properties window, right-click the icon for the wireless card (e.g., Wireless Network Connection, ORiNOCO PC Card) and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
- On the Wireless Network Connection Properties window, click on the Wireless Networks tab.
- If you are in an area with wireless access, you should see UMASS listed in the Available Networks section. Highlight UMASS by clicking it, then click Configure.
- On the Wireless Network Properties window, make sure of the following:
- Network Name: UMASS.
- Data encryption (WEP enabled): should NOT be checked.
- Network Authentication (Shared mode): should NOT be checked.
- This is a computer-to- computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points are not used: should NOT be checked.
Step 3: Log-in to the UMass Wireless Network
To connect to the UMass wireless network, you'll need to identify yourself as a member of the UMass community. To do so:
- Turn on or re-start your computer.
- Open an Internet browser (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer).
- Attempt to access a Web page.
- If your computer and wireless card are correctly configured, you will see the UMass wireless network log-in screen.
- In the fields on the left-hand side of the screen, enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMail password. If successful, you will be briefly directed to a confirmation screen and then to the Web page you tried to access.
