Windows 98 with Orinoco PCMCIA Card

Operating System: Win 98

Step 1: Configure Network Software to Use Wireless Card

  1. Go to Settings > Control Panels > Network.
  2. In the Network window, select the Configuration tab. Highlight the TCIP-IP -> [Your Wireless Card] (e.g., Orinoco PC Card) from the list of installed network components, then click Properties.
  3. In the TCP/IP Properties window, click the IP Address tab. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  4. Click OK twice to close the TCP/IP Properties and Network windows.

Step 2 : Configure Wireless Card to Connect to the UMass Network

Note: The following instructions use Win 98's built-in wireless configuration utility. You may need to use the specific vendor-provided utility that came with your card instead.

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Wireless Network.
  2. From the Select Profile drop-down menu, select the configuration profile you want to use for the network (probably Default), then click Edit.
  3. In the Edit Configuration window:
    • In the Profile Name field, enter a name all in capital letters (e.g., UMASS).
    • From the Network Type drop-down menu, select Access Point.
  4. Click Next. Under Identify Your Network, in the Network Name field, enter UMASS (again, all in capital letters).
  5. Click Next. Under Set Security, make sure that Enable Data Security is NOT selected.
  6. Click Next. Under Power Management, select Off (default power consumption and high performance).
  7. Click Next. Under TCP/IP behavior, make sure Renew IP Address when selecting this profile is NOT selected.
  8. Click Finish. The Edit Configuration window will close and you will return to the Add/Edit Configuration Profile window. Click OK.
  9. Click OK to close the Add/Edit Configuration Profile control panel.

Step 3: Log-in to the UMass Wireless Network

To connect to the UMass wireless network, you'll need to identify yourself as a member of the UMass community. To do so:

  1. Turn on or re-start your computer.
  2. Open an Internet browser (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer).
  3. Attempt to access a Web page.
  4. If your computer and wireless card are correctly configured, you will see the UMass wireless network log-in screen.
  5. In the fields on the left-hand side of the screen, enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMail password. If successful, you will be briefly directed to a confirmation screen, and then, to the Web page you tried to access.
