Macintosh OS 9.x with Orinoco Gold Card

Step 1: Configure Network Software to Use Wireless Card

  1. From the Apple Menu, go to Control Panels > TCP/IP.
  2. In the File menu, select Configurations. Click Default.
  3. Click Duplicate. Enter Wireless as the name for your duplicate configuration, and then double-click Wireless from the list to highlight it.
  4. In the Edit menu, select User Mode. Click Basic, then click OK.
  5. In the Connect via drop-down menu, select WaveLAN/IEEE.
  6. In the Configure drop-down menu, select Using DHCP Server.
  7. The IP address, subnet mask, router address, and name server address will be filled in by the DHCP server and do not need to be entered on this form.
  8. Make sure nothing is entered in the Search domains text box
  9. Close the TCP/IP control panel and save if prompted to do so.

Step 2 : Configure Wireless Card to Connect to the UMass Network

  1. From the Apple menu, select Control Panels > WaveLAN Setup.
  2. On the WaveLAN Setup screen, enter UMASS in the WaveLan Network Name: field. Click Advanced.
  3. In the Advanced Settings window, make sure the following settings are selected:
    • MAC Address: Use Universal
    • Distance between APs: Large
    Click OK to return to the WaveLAN setup window.
  4. In the WaveLan Setup window, click Encryption. Make sure of the following:
    • Enable Encryption is not checked
    • There are no keys specified in the Key field
    Click OK to return to the WaveLAN setup window
  5. Close the WaveLan setup Control Panel.

Step 3: Log-in to the UMass Wireless Network

To connect to the UMass wireless network, you'll need to identify yourself as a member of the UMass community. To do so:

  1. Turn on or re-start your computer.
  2. Open an Internet browser (e.g., Netscape, Internet Explorer).
  3. Attempt to access a Web page.
  4. If your computer and wireless card are correctly configured, you will see the UMass wireless network log-in screen.
  5. In the fields on the left-hand side of the screen, enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMail password. If successful, you will be briefly directed to a confirmation screen and then to the Web page you tried to access.
