Family Housing High-Speed Internet: Instructions & Troubleshooting
Size: 202K

The Office of Information Technologies (OIT), in partnership with Family Housing and Alterations, has completed installing high-speed Internet hardware in over 90% Family Housing apartments.

Note: As of June 12, 2007, this service requires your UMail password (the password you usually enter to access your UMass email account) to log in. OIT is phasing out the use of the UMAccess password in an effort to simplify the way members of the UMass community connect to the campus network and access other OIT services.

Installation Process Overview

Below is a step-by-step overview of the installation timeline, process, and requirements:

Step 1: Sign and Return the Permission to Enter Form

Sign the Permission to Enter Form and return it to the Family Housing Office (Wysocki House, 911 North Pleasant St.) as soon as possible. A paper copy of this form has also been delivered to your apartment. By signing this form you give our installers permission to enter your apartment to install the network hardware. The installer cannot install the hardware unless you have signed and returned the Permission to Enter form.

If you did not sign your Permission to Enter Form by December 15, 2006, you have to pay a $40 installation fee.

Step 2: OIT will provide you with a network hardware installation date .

If you have questions about your scheduled installation date, please call the OIT Help Desk at 545-9400.

Step 3: Before the installation date...

Move all furniture away from your telephone jack and nearby wall areas. If furniture is blocking these areas, our installer cannot install the network hardware and your installation will be rescheduled for after all other units in your apartment complex are completed.

Make sure you have:

  • your OIT Account information (NetID & UMAccess password to register your system). If you have forgotten your password,go to OIT Account Management (A107 LGRC) with your UCard ID to have your password changed.
  • an Ethernet card
  • an Ethernet cable that will reach from the area of the telephone jack to your computer
  • a network hub (optional – if you would like to connect 2 computers)
  • paid your telephone bill - your Internet access will be suspended if your bill is not paid in full

Step 4: Wait until OIT activates your service.

The new hardware will not work until OIT makes a change to activate your high speed service. Network hardware installed in the morning will be activated during the early afternoon on the day it was installed, typically before 2pm. Network hardware installed during the afternoon will be activated by late afternoon, typically before 5pm.

Step 5: Use our instructions to connect.

Once the network hardware has been activated, use our instructions, Family Housing High Speed Internet: Instructions & Troubleshooting (pdf, 201 k), to connect your computer to the hardware. Please note that before you can access the Internet, you’ll be required to register your computer on the campus network using your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMAccess password.
Note: As of June 12, 2007, this service requires your UMail password (the password you usually enter to access your UMass email account) to log in. OIT is phasing out the use of the UMAccess password in an effort to simplify the way members of the UMass community connect to the campus network and access other OIT services.
