Information for Faculty

Revised August 2004

The Office of Information Technologies (OIT) is pleased to announce the completion of its campus-wide classroom jack initiative. As of this fall, public classrooms in ALL academic buildings are part of the Network Registration ("NetReg") System. This means that instructors who have not used a NetReg-enabled classroom will follow a new procedure to connect to the campus network and Internet in public classrooms.

Instructors will now be required to register their computers using the online NetReg System once per semester. Because this significantly improves network security, OIT will be able to permanently activate one jack in each publicly scheduled classroom.

OIT anticipates instructors will find this new system much more convenient than the old system, where an instructor who wishes to use an Ethernet jack in a classroom has to call Telecommunications Services to request a jack activation.

How to Register your Computer

The NetReg system requires an active OIT Account - NetID (OIT Account user name) and password. Instructors who do not currently have an active OIT Account can set up a new account, reactivate an old account, or reset a password in room A113 LGRC.

Registration can be completed in any room with a NetReg jack. Simply plug the network cable into the blue jack with a gray faceplate (usually located near the podium), then open an Internet browser and attempt to open a Web page. Your browser will be automatically be redirected to the NetReg registration Web site. Follow the step-by-step instructions included on the Web site.

NetReg Assistance Available

We encourage all instructors to register their computers in advance of their first class. If you need assistance testing or registering your computer, bring your laptops to A119 LGRC. You can also contact the OIT Help Desk at 545-9400 with questions about OIT Accounts, the NetReg system, or classroom jacks.

Note: If you try to register a computer already registered you will see a message confirming the machine is already registered.
