Check for TCP/IP
- Start your computer while it is connected to an active Ethernet jack.
- Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
- In the left-hand column, click Manage network connections. A new window will open.
- Right-click Local Area Connections and select Properties.
- At this point, Windows Vista might present you with a User Account Control window asking you for permission to carry out this action. Click Continue to move on to the next stage in the process. A Local Area Connection Properties window will open.
If TCP/IP is installed. . .
- In the Local Area Connection Properties window, select Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4), then click Properties. The Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) window will open.
- Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
- Click OK.
If TCP/IP is not installed. . .
- Click Install, then select Protocol.
- Choose TCP/IP, then follow the on-screen directions.
Test your Connection
- Test your connection by opening an Internet browser (e.g., Firefox or Internet Explorer). Note: If you are using a jack that is part of the Network Registration system (NetReg), you will need to register your computer before you can access the campus network.
- After you launch your browser, enter a URL. If you are using a NetReg jack, you will automatically be redirected to the NetReg Web site. The NetReg site can be found at: <http://netreg.oit.umass.edu/>. More information about NetReg
