Check for TCP/IP

  1. Start your computer while it is connected to an active Ethernet jack.
  2. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  3. Right-click on Local Area Connection, and left-click on Properties.
  4. Look at the list of network components that are already installed.

If TCP/IP is installed. . .

  1. Double-click TCP/IP.
  2. Verify that Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected.

If TCP/IP is not installed. . .

  1. Click Install, then select Protocol.
  2. Choose TCP/IP, then follow the on-screen directions.

Test your Connection

  1. Test your connection by opening an Internet browser (e.g., Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer). Note: If you are using a jack that is part of the Network Registration system (NetReg), you will need to register your computer before you can access the campus network.
  2. After you launch your browser, enter a URL. If you are using a NetReg jack, you will automatically be redirected to the NetReg Web site. The NetReg site can be found at: <http://netreg.oit.umass.edu/>. More information about NetReg
