Dial-up Troubleshooting Tips

If you are unable to create a dial-up connection to UMass, and you have verified that you are using the correct user name, password, and telephone number, here are some tips on diagnosing the problem. If these tips do not resolve the problem, please contact the OIT Help Desk at 545-9400, option 1.

Delete & Recreate the Dial-up Networking Connection

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  2. Find the icon for your dial-up connection (usually called UMass PPP). Right-click on the icon, then click Delete.
  3. Double-click Make new connection.
  4. On the Network Connection Wizard screen, click Next.
  5. Click Connect to the Internet. Click Next.
  6. Click I want to set up my Internet connection manually. Click Next.
  7. Click Connect using a dial-up modem. Click Next.
  8. Type in the name of the ISP (in this case, UMass). Click Next.
  9. Enter in the correct telephone number from the list below, then click Next.

    Call Waiting - If you have Call Waiting, you can disable it by typing *70, (comma included) before the phone number. This will disable Call Waiting while you are connected.

  10. Enter your NetID (OIT Account user name), then enter your UMAccess password twice. Uncheck Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection. Click Next.
  11. Select the check box to add a shortcut to the desktop. Click Finish.

Check Modem Properties

  1. Click Start > My Computer.
  2. Right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
  3. Select the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
  4. Within the Device Manager, scroll down until you find the Modems icon.
  5. Click the + sign to the left of the icon to view all of the installed modems. If there are no symbols on the modem icon, the modem is installed and detected properly. If there is an exclamation mark or a red x on the icon, call the Help Desk for assistance.

Check Dialing Properties

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  2. Find the icon for your dial-up connection (usually called UMass PPP). Right-click UMassPPP, then click Properties.
  3. Select the Networking tab.
  4. Make sure the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) check box is selected. Double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  5. Click Advanced. On the General tab, uncheck Use IP header compression.
