Dial-up Troubleshooting Tips

Windows 2000

Operating System: Win 2000

Note: As of June 12, 2007, this service requires your UMail password (the password you usually enter to access your UMass email account) to log in. OIT is phasing out the use of the UMAccess password in an effort to simplify the way members of the UMass community connect to the campus network and access other OIT services.

If you are unable to create a dial-up connection to UMass, and you have verified that you are using the correct user name, password, and telephone number, here are some tips for diagnosing the problem. If these tips do not resolve the problem, please contact the OIT Help Desk at 545-9400, option 1.

Delete & Recreate the Dial-up Networking Connection

  1. Go to Start > Settings.
  2. Click Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  3. Find the icon for your dial-up connection (usually called UMass PPP). Right-click the icon, then click Delete.
  4. Double-click Make new connection.
  5. On the Network Connection Wizard screen, click Next.
  6. Click Dial up to the internet. Click Next.
  7. Click I want to set up my Internet connection manually. Click Next.
  8. Click I connect through a phone line and a modem. Click Next.
  9. Enter in the correct telephone number from the list below, then click Next.

    56k V.90 Dial-up PPP: 577-5600
    56k Dial-up PPP - on campus: 6-5600

Call Waiting - If you have Call Waiting, you can disable it by typing *70, (comma included) before the phone number. This will disable Call Waiting while you are connected.

  10. Enter your NetID (OIT Account user name), then enter your UMail password. Click Next.

  3. Within the Device Manager, scroll down until you find the Modems icon.
  4. Click the + sign to the left of the icon to view all of the installed modems. If there are no symbols on the modem icon, the modem is installed and detected properly. If there is an exclamation mark or a red x on the icon, call the Help Desk for assistance.

Check Dialing Properties

  1. Go to Start > Settings.
  2. Click Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  3. Find the icon for your dial-up connection (usually called UMass PPP). Right-click UMassPPP, then click Properties.
  4. Select the Networking tab.

  6. Click Advanced. On the General tab, clear the Use IP header compression check box.
