Dial-up Configuration

Note: As of June 12, 2007, this service requires your UMail password (the password you usually enter to access your UMass email account) to log in. OIT is phasing out the use of the UMAccess password in an effort to simplify the way members of the UMass community connect to the campus network and access other OIT services.

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.
  2. In the Network Connections window, click New Connection Wizard. The New Connection Wizard pop-up window will open. Click Next. The Network Connection Type window will open.
  3. In the Network Connection Type window, click the radio button next toConnect to the Internet. The Getting Ready window will open.
  4. In the Getting Ready window, click the radio button next to Set up my connection manually. The Internet Connection window will open.
  5. In the Internet Connection window, click the radio button next to Connect using a dial-up modem. The Connection Name window will open.
  6. In the Connection Name window, type a name for your ISP in the ISP Name field. We suggest UMass Dial-up. Click Next. The Phone Number to Dial window will open.
  7. In the Phone Number to Dial window, enter the appropriate phone number from the list below:

    • 56k V.90 Dial-up PPP: 577-5600
    • 56k Dial-up PPP - on campus: 6-5600


    Note: If you live outside the local Amherst calling area, make sure you have included 1 and the area code (1-413).

    Call Waiting - If you have Call Waiting, you can disable it by typing *70, (comma included) before the phone number. This will disable Call Waiting while you are connected.

  8. Click Next. The Connection Availability window will open.
  9. In the Connection Availability window, under Create this connection for: click the radio button next to My use only, then click Next. The Internet Account Information window will open.
  10. In the Internet Account Information window, in the User name: field, enter your NetID(OIT account username), and in the Password: field, enter your UMail password. In the Confirm Password: field, re-type your UMail password.

  11. Click Next. The Completing the New Connection Wizard window will open. You should see the name you provided for your ISP under You have successfully completed the steps needed to create the following connection:. If you wish to add a desktop shortcut to your dial-up connection, check the box next to Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop.
  12. Click Finish.

Connect to the UMass Network

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to a phone jack. Click Start > Connect To > UMass Dial-up.
  2. Enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMail password. For security reasons we recommend you do not save your password. Click Dial.

How to Disconnect

  1. Double-click Dial-up Networking, on the right side of the tray, near the time.
  2. On the UMass Dial-up status screen, click Disconnect.
