Dial-up Configuration

Windows 2000

Operating System: Win 2000

Note: As of June 12, 2007, this service requires your UMail password (the password you usually enter to access your UMass email account) to log in. OIT is phasing out the use of the UMAccess password in an effort to simplify the way members of the UMass community connect to the campus network and access other OIT services.

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  3. Click Make New Connection. Click Next.
  4. On the Network Connection Type screen, select Dial-up to private network. Click Next.
  5. On the Phone Number to Dial screen, enter the appropriate phone number from the list below:

    • 56k V.90 Dial-up PPP: 577-5600
    • 56k Dial-up PPP - on campus: 6-5600

Call Waiting - If you have Call Waiting, you can disable it by typing *70, (comma included) before the phone number. This will disable Call Waiting while you are connected.

  6. Click Next.
  7. On the Connection Availability screen, select either For all users or Only for myself. Click Next. Note: Your choice will depend on whether or not you need to restrict dial-up access in a shared computing environment.
    • For all users allows all users to connect using your user name and password (if you save your password).
    • Only for myself means that you and anyone else who uses your computer will only be able to use this connection only when you are logged in under the current user name.
  8. On the next screen, type in the name you want to use for this connection. We suggest UMassPPP. For quick access to your dial-up connection, we also recommend checking Add a shortcut to my desktop. Click Next, then Finish.

Connect to the UMass Network

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to a phone jack. Double-click UMassPPP on your desktop to start the connection. If you didn't make a shortcut, go to the Network and Dial-up Connections control panel and click UMassPPP.
  2. Enter your NetID (OIT Account user name) and UMail password. For security reasons, we recommend you do not save your password. Click Dial.
