Scan Documents (Macintosh)

Scan Your Document

  1. Place your document squarely on the scanner bed, with the top of the image closest to you.
  2. Go to OIT HD > Applications > Adobe Photoshop CS > Adobe Photoshop CS. Photoshop CS will open.
  3. If the Welcome Screen opens, click Close.
  4. In Photoshop, go to File > Import > Epson Perfection 1670.
Note: The name of this scanner is an example. Select the option for the scanner attached to your computer - there will only be one option for this.
  5. The EPSON… (the name of the scanner attached to your computer) window will open, and the scanner will warm up. This usually takes about 15 seconds. Once the scanner is warm the job progress bar will show the status of your scan.
Note: The scanner starts in the last used mode, if you wish to scan the document automatically and either the Home Mode or Professional Mode window is open, on the Mode drop-down menu select Full Auto Mode, and then in this window click Scan to begin scanning automatically.
Note: If you are knowledgeable about scanner settings and wish to adjust them yourself, in the EPSON... window, on the Mode drop-down menu select either Home Mode (for a limited number of options) or Professional Mode (for the most options) to stop the automatic scan and open the respective window, allowing you to enter your own options.
  6. After a few seconds the Progress window will open, and another horizontal blue bar should begin to fill up from left to right.
  7. Your scanned document will open in Photoshop as an unsaved file called Untitled-1. See below for instructions on how to save your scanned document.

Choose a File Format

Save your document in a format and size that fits your needs. The default scan resolution of 300 ppi (pixels per inch) means that if you scanned a letter paper size document it will be approximately 20MB; much too large to attach to an email or put on a Web site. If you are not sure how you will use the image (e.g. PowerPoint, Web or print), or if you will use it for multiple purposes, begin with a high quality scan, and then resize copies in Photoshop for each particular use. Consult the tables below to help you resize your document.

  1. In Photoshop go to Image > Image Size…. The Image Size window will open.
  2. In the Image Size window, make sure the Constrain Proportions box is selected, then adjust the Resolution and Width/ Height (using Constrained Proportions changing one will change the other) to create the desired image size based upon the tables below:

Save Your Document

Make sure you have the space to save your chosen format to a Zip disk, USB thumb drive, or as an email attachment.

To save your image as a PSD, BMP or TIFF:

  1. Go to File > Save As. The Save As window will open.
  2. In the Save As window:
    • in the Save As field, enter a name for your image.
    • from the Format drop-down menu, choose your desired format (PSD = Photoshop).
    • in the Where drop-down menu at the top of the screen, choose a location to save the file and click Save.

To save your image as a JPG or GIF:

  1. Go to File > Save for Web. The Save for Web window will open.
  2. In the Save for Web window, from the drop-down menu in the Save column on the right side, select GIF or JPEG from the drop-down menu.
  3. Displayed underneath your image in the bottom left corner are: the type of file you have chosen (GIF or JPEG), the new size of the image in this format, and the time it would take the image to load on a dial-up connection (the Photoshop default for this is usually a 28.8 kbps modem). When you are satisfied with the size and appearance of the image click Save in the top right corner.
  4. In the Save Optimized As window chose a location to save to in the Where drop-down menu, then enter a name for your image in the Save As field. Click Save.

Exit Photoshop

  1. Close your image (which will still be called Untitled-1 unless you saved it as a PSD) by clicking the red Close Window icon in the top left corner. A dialogue box will open asking you whether you want to Save changes, click Don't Save.
  2. Go to Photoshop > Quit Photoshop to close Photoshop.
