What is ATC's mission?

ATC's goal is to provide a seamless integration of adaptive services to the UMass Amherst community. ATC is a collaboration of Office of Information Technologies (OIT), Disability Services and the UMass Libraries.

Where is ATC?

ATC is located in Room 2 on the main (Reference) floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library, one floor below the entrance floor.

Who can use ATC?

ATC is open to any member of the University community who has an ADA-defined disability and requires assistance with services such as retrieval of materials from the stacks, photocopying, large print user guides, scanning assistance, screen readers, text enhancements, and text enlargers

What do I need to use ATC?

Members of the University community who wish to use ATC must first obtain a referral from Disability Services. You must also hold an active OIT Account. For more information, see Disability Services and OIT Accounts.

When can I use ATC?

The ATC is open during Du Bois Library hours of operation. Access is available via the Reference Desk on the same floor, and assistance and consulting are available by contacting Ann Garstka at 577-0072. Additional assistance is available by appointment only.

What exactly does ATC offer?

ATC offers book readers, scanners, computers with speech synthesizers, text recognition software and much more. For more information, see ATC's complete list of hardware and software.

What if there is a hardware or software problem?

Contact OIT Computer Classrooms at 5-1611 to report technical problems. Training and consulting on specific applications are only available by appointment through Ann Garstka at 577-0072.

What if I want to bring my personal assistant with me?

ATC welcomes all clients and their personal assistants. However, assistants may not use ATC for personal work. In cases where assistants do use ATC for personal work, their assistant privileges may be revoked and they may not be allowed to work with their clients in the ATC.

Do I need to provide anything of my own?

Yes, if you want to save any files you create, you must bring your own floppy disk, Zip disk or USB drive. Floppy disks may be purchased from vending machines located on the same floor as ATC. You will also need earphones if you use any of the programs providing speech output. Inexpensive earphones may be purchased at the University Store in the Campus Center.
