NetID & Passwords

Your UMass Amherst NetID

Your NetID serves as the primary user name for your Office of Information Technologies (OIT) Account and gives you access to the campus network and SPIRE, email and much, much more. See Account Services for details.

Note: Some faculty and staff have Subsidiary Accounts. These accounts are typically used to access course Web sites or secondary email addresses. The user name for these accounts may or may not be your NetID. Your NetID is the user name associated with your primary OIT Account.

Your OIT Account Password

You OIT Account Password is your key to OIT computing services and gives you access to your personal information such as your email and files stored on UDrive. To protect your online identity, please DO NOT share your password with anyone.

Rules for Passwords

Effective November 27, 2007

  • Must be between 6 and 16 characters
  • Must contain characters from three of the following four categories:
    • uppercase characters (A - Z)
    • lowercase characters (a - z)
    • digits (0 - 9)
    • special characters (limited to the following):
      ! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , - . / : ; < = > ? @ [ \ ] ^ _ ` { | } ~
  • Cannot contain three or more adjacent characters from your NetID
    (e.g., If your NetID is jdoe then your password cannot be 4xP/doe/876)
  • Cannot contain the reverse of your NetID (e.g., 4xP/eodj/876 )
  • Should not be solely composed of English or foreign words or proper names
