GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Office of Information Technologies/Network Systems and Services (NSS) seek to fill one or more Network Assistant positions. Primary duties would include support of approximately 1,200 on-campus Ethernet switches and related equipment including maintenance of related power, cooling, and other physical infrastructure. Additional duties will include shared responsibility for network trouble-ticket handling, fiber-optic cable plant maintenance operations, support of campus-wide wireless network deployments, server backup operations, network equipment installations, and network equipment maintenance at both on- and off-campus sites. This is an entry-level networking position that provides multiple opportunities for learning and advancement in a diverse and complex networking environment.

NSS has overall responsibility for the University of Massachusetts Amherst fiber-optic-based campus network, connections to the Internet and Internet2, and for providing a variety of critical and high-profile services to the campus community. NSS also supports the Five College network and is a founding member of the Internet2 project.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training required.
  • One to two years full-time work experience in a computer related field required.
  • Must have strong background as a user of Windows, or Unix operating system.
  • Required to have demonstrated knowledge of TCP/IP network protocol concepts.
  • Professional experience supporting computing systems, a working knowledge of network hardware, and user-level familiarity with Unix are preferred.
  • Professional experience configuring, installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting hardware and networks, a working knowledge of the TCP/IP network protocol, CISCO networking, and Unix system administration experience is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication abilities are essential as well as a commitment to accuracy in work and documentation.
  • Must be able to do occasional lifting of 60 lbs.
  • Valid Massachusetts drivers’ license required.
  • Some off-hour/weekend work will be required to respond to critical network problems and modifications. Personal pagers will be provided for On-call or off-hour contact consistent with departmental policies.

Hiring Salary Range: $34,800- $43,600

Normal Starting Salary: $34,800- $39,200
