Can I apply for more than one position?
Yes, you can apply for up to two (2) positions. Remember that you need to write a cover letter for each Internship applied for and the cover letter should indicate how you are qualified for the position. Please address each of the qualifications listed on the job description.
What is the application process?
You should send an Internship application (PDF 104K | Word 68K), an up-to-date resume, the names and telephone numbers of two references and a cover letter to us by the deadline of Friday March 6, 2009. Submit the entire application package at one time. You will be notified about an interview by Friday March 27, 2009 and interviews will take place the week of March 30, 2009.
What is the interview like?
You will interview with two or three OIT staff and will be asked questions about your educational and work experiences. You can expect the interview to take less than one-half hour. OIT is going to offer you the opportunity to have the interview videotaped as a learning experience. The videotape will not influence the hiring decision.
When are the opening and closing dates for the program and for the dorms?
Students may arrive at the dorms on Sunday, May 31, 2009. The Internship starts on Monday, June 1, 2009. Your supervisor will let you know when and where you should arrive.
The Internship ends at the end of the day Wednesday, August 19, 2009.
We will let you know the time you should arrive on Sunday, May 31 and what time you should plan to leave on Wednesday, August 19.
Will I be paid for holidays?
Interns are paid on an hourly basis for time worked. You will not be paid for holidays.
How can I arrange for parking?
On the first day of the Internship, you will need to go to the Parking Office and pay for a summer parking pass. You will be responsible for the cost of the parking pass (approx. $65-$75).
Is academic credit available for the internship experience?
Yes, three pass/fail credits are available. Interns will sign an academic contract and will need to meet with their faculty advisor and supervisor two or three times. John Dubach, Chief Information Officer of the Office of Information Technologies, has agreed to serve as the faculty advisor for interns.
How much does it cost to receive the academic credit?
Interns are responsible for the cost of the academic credits. The cost has not been established at this time but interns should expect the cost to be approximately $200 per credit hour with a $35 registration fee for a total cost of $635.
Am I required to receive academic credit?
No, the internship experience is seen as a valuable addition to your resume. Academic credits are offered but not required.
What happens to the academic credit if I do not become a student at the UMass Amherst?
Pass/fail internship credits from any university do not transfer well to other schools. If you do not plan to attend UMass Amherst, then you should probably not plan to receive academic credit.
