Information Security Office

The Information Security Office is responsible for identifying and investigating network and computer-related security issues on campus. Such incidents commonly include:

  • Portscanning from OIT computers or PCs connected to the campus network
  • Computer intrusion attempts (i.e. "Cracking")
  • Compromised systems
  • Denial of service attacks
  • OIT Acceptable Use Policy violations
  • Bandwidth/computing resource abuse
  • Copyright violations

In cases where local, state, or federal laws are violated, we maintain active contacts within the UMass Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, and the local FBI field offices in Springfield and Boston.

We also currently offer informal security auditing and consulting for on-campus departments or students interested in improving the security of their systems or local network.
