Network Systems & Services
NSS operates and manages the campus backbone network which connects departments and buildings on campus with each other and with external networks. Network management systems are used to monitor activity and report unusual events. NSS also manages and coordinates connections to national and international networks such as the Internet.
NSS is responsible for identifying and investigating network and computer-related security issues on campus. Such incidents commonly include:
- Portscanning from OIT computers or PCs connected to the campus network
- Computer intrusion attempts (i.e. "Cracking")
- Compromised Systems
- Denial of Service Attacks
- OIT Acceptable Use Policy Violations
- Bandwidth/Computing Resource Abuse
- Copyright Violations
In cases where local, state, or federal laws are violated, NSS maintains active contacts within the UMass Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, and the local FBI field offices in Springfield and Boston.
NSS also currently offers informal security auditing and consulting for on-campus departments or students interested in improving the security of their systems or local network.
